A new initiative aims to spare West Marin residents from making the long, winding drive to San Rafael each time they need to do business with the county. The program’s name encapsulates its mission: County Services Closer to Home. “We’re going to bring staff from key departments who are going to provide in-person customer service to West Marin residents. The idea is to enhance communication,” said Fernando Barreto, an aide to Supervisor Dennis Rodoni. “Residents will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions they might have.” Sessions will be held the second Wednesday of each month from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the West Marin Multi-Services Center in Point Reyes Station. Among the departments to be represented are the Community Development Agency, the Public Works Department, the Sheriff’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office. For the last year or so, Mr. Barreto has been holding office hours with Spanish-speaking residents every Monday at the multi-services center. The new initiative will expand on those efforts, and Mr. Barreto will be present to offer Spanish-language interpretation as needed. The precise services offered will depend on the needs of residents and will be refined in coming weeks. “It’s an experiment,” Mr. Barreto said. “We’ll be learning a lot on the fly.” Depending on demand, the customer-service hours could be expanded in the future, and more departments could be represented. “This is an idea we’ve been exploring for a while, bearing in mind that transportation from West Marin can be complicated or impossible for some of our constituents, who don’t always get the answers they need on time.”
