Point Reyes Station residents interested in the village’s water and wastewater use and systems can make their views heard through a new survey from the county’s Community Development Agency. The survey, which asks residents questions that address specific water concerns and the desire for potential projects, is the latest step in an initiative funded by a $49,000 grant from the California Department of Water Resources to aid communities in water resource planning. Through the grant, the county is employing the same process in Point Reyes Station as in Dillon Beach to identify water-related issues in the towns. Dillon Beach has already had two meetings and a survey, and on April 30 at 6 p.m. residents there will meet in the Tomales Town Hall to discuss the survey and potential next steps. In Point Reyes Station, an initial meeting was held on March 25 and a meeting to discuss the survey results will be held on June 5 at 6 p.m. at West Marin School. The county hopes to use resident feedback from the meetings and surveys to come up with projects that could be supported by the Integrated Regional Water Management outreach initiative. That state program, funded by Proposition 1, has $52 million available for projects in the Bay Area. Projects proposed in the Point Reyes Station survey include a feasibility study for public restrooms and looking into public refill stations for water bottles. The survey asks residents what they consider to be the town’s strengths, offering up a few suggestions—community character and the community plan amongst them—but leaves room for people to fill in their own ideas. It also asks what residents want done to enhance their community (“leave it alone” is a listed option) and about a host of concerns such as drinking water, septic systems, groundwater, local waterways, flooding and sea-level rise. The county hopes residents will fill the survey out as soon as possible so the results can be summarized before the meeting in June. The survey can be found at marincounty.org/depts/cd/divisions/environmental-health-services/point-reyes-station-water-project and hard copies are available at the Point Reyes Library.
