A man donning a ski mask ran into the Papermill Creek saloon last Friday night and dropped a note on the bar. Scrawled in all uppercase letters, it read: “If the vaccine passport isn’t removed by this time next week this place will burn.” Now, the bar, which has required proof of vaccination from customers since August, is seeking help from law enforcement and the public in finding the person responsible. Manager and bartender Jared Litwin said his coworkers, customers and the tenant who lives above the bar are worried. He is distributing flyers offering a reward for more information. “We haven’t gotten a lot of help from the sheriffs,” Mr. Litwin said. Sergeant Brenton Schneider, a public information officer with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, said, “We’ve exhausted our investigative leads to this point and have no suspect information.” Mr. Litwin said he only knows of a few locals who hold extreme anti-vaccine beliefs, and most of his regulars are happy with the bar’s policy. Some of West Marin’s bars, including Smiley’s Schooner Saloon and Rancho Nicasio, have similar vaccine policies, but a number of bars in Fairfax don’t. “We’ve gotten some crazy phone calls and nasty messages online, mostly from people who don’t even come into our bar,” Mr. Litwin said.
