TREES: Arborists felled two giant—and long dead—old-growth redwoods along the road through Samuel P. Taylor State Park last month, a joint project of the county and Marin Municipal Water District. Though the idea was to cut the trees in such a way that they toppled into Lagunitas Creek to create new habitat for coho salmon, one redwood fell differently than hoped, due to its rotted core: on its way down, it crashed into a bay tree that subsequently fell onto workers’ trucks.    David Briggs
