After Diekmann’s General Store changed owners two years ago, Kristin Lawson lost her job as a cashier. But she wasted little time before pooling her resources and opening her own antique business upstairs. Two Silos Mercantile sells jewelry, vintage furniture and other home décor, tool sets and even automobile parts. It is as much a source of extra income as it is a learning process for Ms. Lawson, who, like other antique collectors, views her monthly trips to rummage sales across the region as a way to “see what people are looking for.” The business has drawn support from the community, whose shopkeepers have helped spread the word about her collection to motorists passing through town. “Even on rainy days,” she remarked, “I have people come in.”
