NATIONAL “COFFEE WITH A COP” DAY AT TOBY’S FEED BARN IN POINT REYES STATION — OCTOBER 4, 2017

“Coffee with a Cop” was launched in 2011 by the police department in Hawthorn, California to help establish trust with the community. Five years later, the event has been hosted in all 50 states and has expanded to Canada, Europe, Australia and Africa. The key to its success is in opening the door for interactions outside of the crises that typically bring law enforcement officers and community members together. There is no agenda and there are no speeches, just open conversation over a cup of coffee. Last Wednesday’s event was represented by our local Marin County Sheriff’s Captain David Augustus, Lieutenant Steve de la O, Deputy Jason Swift and Deputy Kenny Anderson, as well as rangers Jose Galindo and Michael Hastings from the Point Reyes National Seashore. The first Wednesday in October is now known as “National Coffee With a Cop” day, when thousands of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies come out and join their communities for a cup of coffee.
