An exhibit of more than 60 photographs by photographer Lee Sims, taken between 1971and 1974, opens this Sunday at the Jack Mason Museum of West Marin History in the Inverness Library. The Point Reyes Light was founded as the Baywood Press in 1948 by Dave and Wilma Rogers. After going through a few owners,
Don and Clara Mae DeWolfe bought the paper in 1958 and changed the name to the Point Reyes Light in 1966. In 1970, the DeWolfes sold it to Michael and Annabelle
Gahagan, who brought a new perspective to the paper and oversaw the last years as a newspaper printed on a historic hot-type flatbed letterpress. The Gahagans sold the paper in 1975 to David and Cathy Mitchell, who won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of Synanon. Today the Point Reyes Light is owned by
Tess Elliott and her partner David Briggs, who acquired it—along with the Light’s longest standing competitor, the West Marin Citizen—in 2015.
