Artists try to make Park Service back off

A series of seven exhibits in the next four months will celebrate the cultural heritage of the Olema Valley and try to protect it from Park Service zealotry.

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area for the past three years has been evicting people from historic buildings and then laying waste to many of the structures.

The first exhibit will open on Thursday, Sept. 7, at Jernigan Wicker Fine Art in San Francisco with a display of photographs by Lucy Gray and Mason Morfit featuring Warren Weber's Star Route Farms.

Called The Olema Valley Cultural Landscape, An Agrarian Treasure, the exhibition will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday until Sept. 16. The gallery is located at 161 Natoma St., and those interested in attending can get more information by calling (415) 512-0424.

Here are the other exhibitions scheduled:

Olema Valley Ranches Today, a group exhibition of plein air paintings of West Marin cultural landscapes, will be held from Saturday, Sept. 9 until Nov. 6 at Claudia Chapline Gallery and Sculpture Garden in Stinson Beach. The exhibition will be on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays through Mondays and by appointment. The gallery can be reached at 868-2308.

Early Artists in the Olema Valley : Historic Views of Land and Sea, will be on exhibit Sept. 16 through Nov. 19 at the Bolinas Museum. The display will open to the public Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m., and by appointment. It will feature an additional exhibition of the historic Wilkins Ranch (now Rancho Baulines) at the Bolinas Wye through Oct. 22. Those interested can call the museum at 868-0330.

Western Views: Images of the Western United States, will display photographs of the Olema Valley by Mason Morfit from Sept. 19 until Nov. 20 at the Transamerica Pyramid Gallery, 600 Montgomery St., San Francisco. The exhibit will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery can be reached at 983-4840.

Vanishing West Marin: Hamlet, Ghost Town of Tomales Bay, will feature paintings of Susan Hall and Dana Hooper in an exhibition from Oct. 2 until Dec. 29 at the Stinson Beach Library. The display will be open Mondays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The library can be reached at 868-0252.

The Olema Valley: A Rural Community, will exhibit photographs by Art Rogers from Oct. 12 until Dec. 5 at the Bank of America Concourse Gallery, Bank of America Center, 555 California St., San Francisco. The display will be open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight. Those wanting additional information about the exhibition or the photographs can call Art Rogers at 663-8345.

The Olema Valley - Year 2000, will feature a "mixed-media community participatory installation" from Oct. 20 to Nov. 27 at Gallery Route One in Point Reyes Station. The exhibit will be open Thursdays through Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those wanting to contact the gallery can call 663-1347.
