A bevy of Labor Day parties for West Marin
Celebrants in West Marin can get their last kick of summer at a variety of festivities set to the fill Labor Day weekend.
Tomales residents will honor their town's humble but hopeful origins by hosting their sixth annual Founder's Day Celebration, Friday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 5.
Drama will come to the Tomales Regional History Center with a musical review at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Two centuries of Marin and Sonoma history will be set to music, dance and action in Singing Our Way Home, a work written and directed by historian Kathie Lawson of Dillon Beach.
Ron Walters and the Petaluma Harmoneers will star in the review, which will include local singers and actors plus the Petaluma Square Dancers and Julie Faye's Dancers.
Advance tickets are available at Diekmann's General Store and the history cen ter. Reservations can be made by calling (707) 878-9443.
Sunday's events start with a pancake breakfast served at Tomales Presbyterian Church from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a worship service offered there and at the Church of the Assumption, simultaneously.
The town's Main Street Parade starts at noon (or typically, a little before) and will be highlighted by an antique biplane flyby.
Afterwards, a chicken barbecue will be held in the town park. Folks can listen to music from "the bandstand," enjoy games and concessions, and take part in an auction to benefit the Marin County 4-H Council. Auction items clude toys, lunches, wines, overnight stays, Beanie Babies, gift certificates, and other items
At 3 p.m., the Sonoma County Men's Chorus will give a concert at the Presbyterian Church. Since seating is limited, those who wish to attend are urged to buy advance tickets at Diekmann's General Store and Greenstreets Video.
Other events throughout the day include the history center's annual book sale, an antique gas-engine show, and an antique car show.
Folks headed to the Point Reyes National Seashore on Sunday can participate in the park's 18th annual sand-sculpture contest at Drake's Beach.
This all-day event begins at 9 a.m., and is open to artful and artless people of all ages. Judging starts at 1 p.m., and prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m. Those with questions can call 669-1534, or 669-1250.
In Point Reyes Station, Toby's Feedbarn will be the site of a two-day rummage sale to benefit the Dance Palace. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6.
Also on Labor Day Monday, the Woodacre Improvement Club will host a Farewell to Summer Pool Party from 1 to 5 p.m. Families and individuals are invited to swim, play baseball, and partake in the club's barbecue or bring picnic lunches. Those with questions can call 488-0708.
And in Bolinas on Monday will be the annual benefit for the community center.
