Supe's treasurer sentenced to jail

By Stephen Barrett

Supervisor Steve Kinsey's onetime campaign treasurer has received a 16-month jail sentence for embezzling more than $19,000 from the supervisor's construction business and 1996 campaign fund.

The bookkeeper, Jamie Ott of San Rafael, worked for Kinsey for five years until the supervisor discovered "irregularities" in his business account last September.

Upon investigation, Kinsey discovered Ott had forged 16 checks from the campaign treasury for a total of $7,643 and 11 checks for from his Forest Knolls construction business, Design Build Alliance, for a total of $9,263.

In addition, Ott owes $2,711 on a Visa card account he set up in Kinsey's name in 1995.

County investigators accused Ott, 28, of either depositing these checks in his personal bank account or cashing them at Marin County bars. Sheriff's deputies arrested him in August for grand theft, forgery, and unauthorized use of a credit card.

After pleading guilty last month to these felony charges, Ott was sentenced to 16 months in jail, five years probation, and ordered to pay Kinsey approximately $19,000.

Since the supervisor filed a criminal complaint against Ott last April, two other firms have accused Ott of embezzling up to $70,000 from them.
