Braves gridders end pre-season with wins
By Isabelle LeMieux
Pre-season football ended on a high note for Tomales High Schools Braves Friday, with both the junior varsity and varsity teams winning hard-fought games. Varsity football played their most surprising game of the pre-season last week versus Kings Academy in Sunnyvale. Tomales went into the second half of the game losing 14 to 8. Kings Academy continued to prevail until the last 50 seconds of the fourth quarter when senior Ben Kaplan ran in the ball to tie the score. With less than 40 seconds left in the game, senior Mike Johns caught a spectacular pass from junior Joe Moreda. Johns scored a touchdown bringing the team the 2-point conversion they needed to win. Tomales defense fended off the opposing team for the last seconds of the game, allowing the score to remain 16-14 in Tomales favor.
Emotional win for Braves
"In all my nine years as coach, [that was] one of the most emotional wins," said coach Feliciano, who said he was impressed with the pre-season finale.
The junior varsity team also played strongly against Kings Academy. Tied at halftime, Tomales rose to the challenge and played a flawless second-half. Key errors by Kings Academy allowed Tomales to score several points. Sophomore Nick Carmagno scored his second running touchdown and freshman Zach Wenrich scored a spectacular touchdown on a running play.
"I was impressed with how our kids stayed determined and mistake free," coach Bob Harr said. Both junior varsity and varsity teams have 4 wins and 1 loss.
Braves fall to Wildcats
Boys soccer were defeated at home by Calistogas Wildcats on Friday. In the first half of the game, Calistoga scored four goals, discouraging the Tomales team. In the second half, Tomales managed to score two goals but was unable to take the lead. Late in the second half, two more goals scored by Calistoga brought the final score to 6 to 2. Senior Tyler Akers commented after their loss, "we were happy with this result as Calistoga usually beats its opponents in double digits."
Girls soccer played Upperlake at home on Tuesday. Tomales suffered an unfortunate loss to the larger team. Senior Tanya Trimble scored the only goal late in the last half bringing the final score to 4-1.
Tomales Volleyball lost their league opener at home versus Middletown on Tuesday. The girls were defeated by a pretty large margin, losing 3 out of their 5 matches. The varsity team lost the first three of five matches due to the opposing teams unstoppable offense. The junior varsity team didnt play due to cancellation.
