Computer theft at Tomales High

A new Dell laptop computer was stolen from an administrative room at Tomales High School last week.

The $2,000 computer was purchased only three weeks ago, said school principal Terry Hughey, and was to be used by kitchen staff. The machine was being stored in the room that houses the school’s computer server.

School authorities reported the computer missing Friday, Oct. 31, but Hughey reasoned the theft must have occurred sometime in the morning of Oct. 29, based on the class schedule.

Sheriff’s deputy Rob Maples said the crime could be considered grand theft. If a juvenile was convicted of stealing the computer, a sentence could range from community service to time in juvenile hall.

Deputy Maples did not link last week’s theft with acts of vandalism and thefts that have plagued Point Reyes Station over the past year.

At West Marin School a laptop computer was stolen in January and three iMac computers were taken in May. None of the stolen computers have been recovered.
