Stinson weekend resident dies
By Jan Harris
Longtime Marin resident, Adelaide Margaret McCready, died Monday, October 27, 2003 at Marin General Hospital following a short illness. She was 88. Her passing was peaceful, surrounded by members of her immediate family.
Adelaide was born March 1, 1915, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Adelaide came to Marin in 1954 from Berkeley, CA, and with her husband Rolland built a log kit house in the Seadrift Subdivision on the Stinson Beach sandspit. She loved to swim and fish in the Pacific and go clamming and crabbing in the Bolinas Lagoon. Her clam chowder was legendary. She would walk the beach almost daily, collecting driftwood and shells and other flotsam washed up by the sea.
Active in Stinson
While living in Stinson, she was very active in her community, especially the Allied Arts and Presbyterian Church. In 1970, she published a book of poetry and prose entitled Two Letters to a Peacemaker. In 1961, the family bought a second home in Mill Valley, but returned to Stinson weekends and summers. In the late 1960s, Adelaide moved back to Stinson and remained in her Seadrift home until the 1980s.
Adelaide had been a resident of The Redwoods since 1990. She loved the arts, especially music, and was a member of the Choral Singers of Marin from 1993 to 1995. She loved all of nature and the outdoors; mountains, forests, rivers, and ocean.
Her brother, George A. King, preceded her in death in April of this year. A son, Mark Rolland McCready, died in 1971. She is survived by her daughter Jan McCready Harris of Gualala, and son Craig Martin McCready of Corte Madera, and grandchildren Val Luergan, Jasmine McCready Tibbets, Mark McCready, Kristy Joy McCready, and Daemian Luergan all of Marin County; Bryn Harris of Santa Maria; and Sahreem Luergan of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Donations
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Adelaides name be made to any charity concerned with nature, wildlife or the preservation of environment.
