CHP biker guilty of drunk driving

By Jonathan B. Opet

An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer – who, after drinking beers with his buddies at the Old Western Saloon in Point Reyes Station, slammed his motorcycle into a bicyclist near Nicasio Reservoir last spring – was convicted of two felonies on Feb. 24.

On June 5, 2005, Denis Gallotti, 46, of Novato, drove his personal 1996 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road near Nicasio Reservoir, and hit Samuel McMillan, 55, of Mill Valley, who was repairing his bicycle close to the shoulder of the road. Both men suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospitals. McMillan fractured his legs and broke his pelvic bone.

After a 17-day jury trial at the Marin County Civic Center, Gallotti was found guilty of drunken driving and causing great bodily injury and also of driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or more. Gallotti could face up to six years in prison.
