Bicyclist falls into path of car

A bicyclist lost his balance on Highway 1 north of Point Reyes Station shortly before noon, Sunday, and fell into the path of an oncoming car. He received major injuries when the bumper of the oncoming car struck his head, Highway Patrol officer Patrick Ensley told The Light.

Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Anderson said a group of bicyclists was southbound just before noon when one of them braked hard to avoid something in the road. The bicyclist riding behind him, identified by the CHP as Mark McLane, inadvertantly fell over when he braked to avoid the rider ahead of him.

The front bumper of a car hit McLane in the head with such force that he began losing brain fluid through an ear, an officer reported.

Officer Ensley said McLane was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by a rescue helicoper, which landed at Millerton Point. One officer who took part in the rescue said he feared for the survival of McLane, who is now in the hospital’s intensive-care unit.
