Laguna School's new head quits

After taking the job only a month ago, Laguna School Principal and teacher Jim Scullion has resigned, saying, "I don't think it was a fit for me.

"I don't think I really thought about the position. Things moved very quickly," Scullion said, referring to the hiring process.

Last month, the one-room school in Chileno Valley delayed the start of fall classes for a week after Principal Mary Ann Diaz-Romero resigned in early August, forcing trustees to scramble to find a replacement.

Scullion on Wednesday insisted his resignation has nothing to do with parents, teachers, or trustees. "It's a different lifestyle," he said, noting he missed daily interaction with other teachers and teacher association activities.

Scullion is the one fulltime teacher at Laguna. Two others work parttime.

Trustee Ken Joseph on Wednesday said he is shocked by Scullion's resignation, noting the new principal has been well liked by students and parents.

Scullion was offered a salary of $52,000 -- some $21,690 more than former Principal Diaz-Romero earned after more than seven years with the district, JR Perkiss of the Marin Office of Education noted.

Although Scullion has promised Laguna trustees to continue at the school until a new principal is hired, officials at Bayside-Martin Luther King school in Sausalito expect Scullion to resume teaching there on Monday.
