Senator Dianne Feinstein sponsored legislation on Tuesday that would allow Drakes Bay Oyster Company to continue operating until 2022, ten years beyond the expiration of its current permit with the National Park Service.
Feinstein—who has demonstrated support for the continuation of the company since 2007—was careful to allay fears that the extension would set a dangerous precedent, opening doors to commercial operations in wilderness. A clause in the proposed legislation states that nothing in it shall be cited for the management of lands outside the seashore.
“I just don’t believe that the Congressional designation of ‘potential wilderness’ should require the Park Service to force out this historic operation in 2012—especially since the oyster operation is surrounded by so many working farms,” Feinstein said.
