December 31, 1998 Sheriff's Calls
DOGTOWN - Two students ran away while on a school field trip to Union Square. One was seen that day talking with friends from the Tenderloin.
INVERNESS - A Highway Patrolman on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard arrested a motorist on drunk driving charges. A deputy arrested the motorist's passenger on charges of public drunkenness, but the passenger was later released without being formally charged.
POINT REYES STATION - A woman turned over to deputies a wallet found in a business.
BOLINAS - Deputies received a report of a "man down" on Brighton Beach and arrested the man on charges of public drunkenness. He was later released without being formally charged.
POINT REYES STATION - A girl reported that 20 boys in their late teens showed up at her home at 10:20 p.m., thinking a party was going on. The girl told deputies her parents were away and that the boys threw rocks at the home and knocked over a barbecue.
TOMALES - A motorist at 3:30 a.m. reported hitting a cow at Dillon Beach and Middle roads. The motorist said the cow was probably injured. It was last seen running down Dillon Beach Road toward Lawson's Resort. A deputy attempted to notify a rancher.
DILLON BEACH - Deputies received a series of 911 hangup calls from a home on Kailua Way. Neighbors told officers the home's owners had left earlier that day.
TOMALES - Medics responded when a teenager became sick, possibly from food poisoning.
LAGUNITAS - A woman on King Mountain Road at 8:30 p.m. reported a vehicle was trespassing on her property and had turned out its lights.
TOMALES - A woman at 9:15 p.m. complained of 12 to 15 loud juveniles at Highway 1 and Dillon Beach. She said she was unsure if they were drinking but that she had seen one of them urinating on a fence. A deputy contacted the juveniles who agreed to turn down their music.
INVERNESS - A woman on Inverness Way complained that a 16 year old living in a camper shell was having a party at 11:45 p.m. and keeping her awake. She said such disturbances are a continuing problem. A deputy contacted the 16 year old.
WOODACRE - A woman living on Redwood Drive called deputies to report that a truck had just driven through the middle of her front yard and over her septic system's leach lines. She said her husband was now driving around looking for the truck.
FOREST KNOLLS - A woman on Tamal Road reported someone had stolen a $125 cellular phone from a cabin at an institution.
POINT REYES STATION - A woman at 10:30 p.m. reported there were three black cows on Highway 1. She said there was a hole in the fence of a pasture, making it likely there would be more loose cows. A deputy could not find the cows.
FOREST KNOLLS - A store's burglar alarm sounded at 8:45 a.m. A deputy determined that children bouncing a ball off a wall of the store may have set off the alarm.
SAN GERONIMO - Deputies received a report of a man with a pickup truck dumping trash on a lot at Deer Camp and San Geronimo Valley drives. A deputy found limbs on the ground and contacted the man, who said he was dropping off wood.
INVERNESS - After a car ran off Sir Francis Drake Boulevard at 10:30 p.m., a deputy asked the driver if he was injured. The passenger "staggered out of the car and was not sure," the officer reported.
INVERNESS PARK - A vehicle ran into a ditch at Bear Valley Road and Fox Drive. A tow truck was dispatched to free it.
BOLINAS - A Brighton Avenue resident at 12:45 a.m. complained that a stranger was sitting on his deck and refusing to leave. A deputy told the man to move on.
INVERNESS PARK - A resident reported that a second man, who has mental problems, had come to his house at 9:45 p.m. asking for money. The resident declined to name the man in order to "protect his reputation." However, when the second man returned a few minutes later and allegedly threatened him, the resident gave deputies the man's name.
SAN GERONIMO - A water pipe broke along
Sir Francis Drake Boulevard near the San Geronimo Valley Cultural Center.
A deputy notified Marin Municipal Water District.
December 23, 1998 Sheriff's Calls
INVERNESS - The postmaster found a nylon bag of men's wet clothing in the postoffice and turned it over to a deputy.
BOLINAS - A Horseshoe Hill Road resident reported someone had entered his weekend residence by force and may have stayed there. Nothing was taken.
INVERNESS - A burglar broke a window in the door of a Douglass Street home and left the door ajar but took nothing.
POINT REYES STATION - A resident lost his wallet downtown.
POINT REYES STATION - A woman reported a vandal had smeared feces on a wall and door of the Red Barn.
BOLINAS - A man lost a two-way radio on Marin Way.
STINSON BEACH - A Seadrift Road resident complained of receiving numerous hangup phone calls on her answering machine.
HICKS VALLEY - A woman turned over to deputies a mobile radio which, she said, she found last October in Forest Knolls.
STINSON BEACH - A woman called deputies from Oregon asking for advice in evicting an emotionally disturbed female tenant whom, the landlord said, is living in the woman's vacation home. A deputy gave her advice.
INVERNESS - A resident found a lady's shoulder bag on Hawthornden Way and turned it in at the postoffice. After it went unclaimed for two weeks, the postmaster notified deputies, who gave her advice.
TOMALES - A man living on John St. said another man had come to his residence at 10:30 p.m. asking for water. The resident said the second man had hung around town all day talking to himself and seeming agitated.
INVERNESS - A woman on South Dream Farm Road reported a vandal had broken a rear window of her house.
POINT REYES STATION - Deputies received a report that a tree branch had fallen into power lines along Viento Way during high winds. An officer could not find it.
INVERNESS PARK - Deputies received a report of a woman dressed all in black acting strangely on Vallejo Avenue at 8:30 a.m. An officer could not find her.
WOODACRE - A Carson Road woman reported a car cover and an antique bench for a garden had been stolen from her frontyard during the night. She said this was her third car cover to be stolen.
FOREST KNOLLS - A Tamal Road woman said she was jogging beside Sir Francis Drake Boulevard when a car with two male occupants stopped, and they opened the trunk and passenger's door. This forced her to go around the vehicle, which she found suspicious, the woman told deputies.
POINT REYES STATION - A man on Lorraine Avenue reported a burglar stole a backpack, a CD player, and two CDs from his vehicle.
POINT REYES STATION - A deputy helped a motorist find his vehicle, which turned out to be on B Street.
TOMALES - A man complained at 8 p.m. that a small group of juveniles were playing loud music. He said he'd heard the youths were going to have a large party. A deputy dispersed the juveniles.
BOLINAS - A woman at 9 p.m. complained of very loud music in her neighborhood. She asked that when an officer found those responsible for the noise that he let them know there is a hospice patient, who is very sick, in her house.
SAN GERONIMO - Deputies received a complaint that youths were playing basketball at the school at 9 p.m. A deputy contacted the youths, who said they would leave as soon as they finished their game.
OLEMA - A vandal smashed the window of a vehicle parked on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard at 10 p.m.
TOMALES - A woman complained about a loud party on Dillon Beach Road at 2 a.m. A deputy later reported the party was over.
TOMALES - A woman reported that a stop sign had been knocked down at Highway 1 and Tomales-Petaluma Road. She said some students had tried to take the sign, but it was now back at the intersection - albeit still on the ground.
MARSHALL - A man at 6:20 p.m. reported hearing six gunshots at the bottom of Clark Road.
BOLINAS - Firefighters responded when someone had a seizure on Laurel Road.
BOLINAS - A man complained that a merchant and her dogs had blocked him from entering the postoffice. He added that she is abusive every time she's near him.
POINT REYES STATION - A Mesa Road resident called deputies and asked them to close her garage door if she had left it open. She hadn't.
SAN GERONIMO - A Forest Knolls motorist told a deputy his car's rear license plate had disappeared. The officer advised him to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman, who had earlier reported her ex-husband may be tapping her phone, told a deputy she thinks she's now found additional devices under her house.
December 17, 1998 Sheriff's Calls
CHILENO VALLEY - A woman notified deputies that a car, which apparently had been in a wreck, was in the middle of Marshall-Petaluma Road. The car's passenger-side window was shattered, and its brake lights were on, she said. A deputy found a man asleep in the car and turned him over to the Highway Patrol, which arrested him on drunk-driving charges.
BOLINAS - A man reported that a passenger stole his wallet containing $436, which he had left inside his car when he stopped on Wharf Road to run an errand at a bar. The victim told deputies he believes the second man is en route to Palm Springs.
FOREST KNOLLS - A woman told deputies she had secured a court order requiring her estranged husband to move out of their house, taking only his clothes and business materials. She said her house has now been burglarized of $1,500 in jewelry and that she suspects her estranged husband is the culprit.
POINT REYES STATION - The sheriff's log a week ago reported a bartender had asked deputies to remove a disc jockey who had become abusive. When the DJ objected to a Sheriff's Call about the incident, The Light checked with one of the deputies involved. The officer said that despite the log entry, her impression was that the complaint did not originate with the bartender. She added that a bar customer had been the person causing a disturbance, not the DJ, and that the customer had left by the time officers arrived.
LAGUNITAS - A Spring Road resident complained that a thief had stolen eight saplings and three landscaping rocks.
TOMALES - A burglar broke into a vehicle parked on Carrie Street and stole property.
BOLINAS - Deputies on Wharf Road arrested a man on charges of public drunkenness.
HICKS VALLEY - A woman found a cellular phone.
POINT REYES STATION - An employee locked herself out of a second-floor office in the Livery Stable. Her boss let her back in at 9:15 p.m.
BOLINAS - Deputies received a complaint of juveniles playing loud music on Wharf Road at 10:45 p.m. The disturbance was abated before an officer arrived.
POINT REYES STATION - There was a non-injury traffic accident at Highway 1 and the Point Reyes-Petaluma Road at 8 a.m.
STINSON BEACH - A Seadrift Road man reported that for several months he has received "strange calls...It sounds like a keyboard typing, and then they hang up."
INVERNESS - A Woodhaven Road man reported a thief had stolen $120 worth of Christmas bulbs off his house. There were no strings attached to the loot because the thief left the wiring behind. Nor did the thief take any other property.
STINSON BEACH - A restaurant at 9:30 a.m. reported loose horses were running around downtown, one of them being gray. A deputy could not find them.
NICASIO - A rancher complained that he and his neighbors have been having problems with trespassers. One trespasser, he said, left a gate open, allowing a cow to get loose. The cow fell into a ravine and died. A deputy gave him advice.
BOLINAS - A woman at 11:20 p.m. complained about juveniles playing loud music and said the youths are "continually abusive." A deputy got the music turned down and the juveniles' party moved indoors.
WOODACRE - A process server complained that a 61-year-old naked man attacked him with a broom when he went to the man's home on Railroad Avenue.
SAN GERONIMO - A San Geronimo Valley Drive woman reported losing her cellular phone on a bus somewhere in Marin.
FOUR CORNERS - A rollover traffic accident at 4 p.m. left debris in the roadway. No one was injured.
MARSHALL - The Humane Society asked deputies to look for a loose horse on Highway 1. The horse was not found.
POINT REYES STATION - A fight broke out among several youths at Highway 1 and Third Street, but deputies were unable to determine what caused the disturbance because witnesses gave conflicting statements. One witness, who initially refused to identify himself, was taken into custody until he did.
HICKS VALLEY - Firefighters at 9 p.m. reported a naked man was walking in the middle of Point Reyes-Petaluma Road. Deputies could not find him.
TOMALES - A vandal kicked over three or four trees and broke a bench on Irvin Road.
OLEMA - A transient showed up at a Highway 1 man's door at 9 p.m. asking for food or blankets. He said he was trying to get to San Francisco. A deputy told him to move along.
STINSON BEACH - A deputy notified the Humane Society that a raccoon had been injured at Highway 1 and Calle del Arroyo. The deputy said the raccoon's hind legs were not moving, so the Humane Society told the officer to shoot it. The deputy then radioed back that the raccoon's hind legs had started to move, at which point the Humane Society told the deputy not to shoot. The Humane Society said it would pick up the raccoon.
OLEMA HILL - A deputy shot a deer injured in traffic.
TOMALES - A vandal drove onto the high school's grounds, damaging trees and grass near the gym.
INVERNESS - A burglar broke into a Laurel View Way man's home and stole $260 from his office.
POINT REYES STATION - West Marin Health and Human Services reported that a woman had said she would shoot her landlord or a deputy if she were evicted.
NICASIO - A vandal at a construction site on Nicasio Valley Road broke a vehicle's window and vehicle antennas, along with damaging a septic tank.
DILLON BEACH - A juvenile at a Sonoma County treatment center told a counselor about a sexual encounter she'd had with a center employee six months ago while on the coast. She said the two subsequently had sex several times in Sonoma County.
December 10, 1998 Sheriff's Calls
STINSON BEACH - A woman reported that her husband pushed her out of his apartment, causing her to fall to the ground. He then kicked her twice, she said. The woman said she had suffered scrapes and bruises, but she refused to allow a deputy to interview her in person or photograph her injuries. She said she did not want to press charges. Meanwhile, her husband said his wife had refused to leave his apartment and with her fist broke a pane of glass in his door.
BOLINAS - A man reported that someone had put dirt in his vehicle's gas tank and damaged a tire. He noted he has already been subpoenaed to testify in a case involving similar vandalism. A deputy who looked at the vehicle reported "little physical evidence" of damage.
OLEMA - A Sir Francis Drake Boulevard resident reported that a burglar stole an airless sprayer, a generator, and a chainsaw from his tool shed.
BOLINAS - A deputy on Wharf Road arrested a man on charges of public drunkenness. The man was later released without being formally charged.
TOMALES - A woman who reported losing her wallet got it back in the mail the next day from someone who reported finding it in a town cemetery.
POINT REYES STATION - An Inverness man, who had left his car with a for-sale sign at Highway 1 and the levee road, reported a vandal had broken two windows and scratched the paint.
BOLINAS - An Ocean Parkway man reported that someone had stolen his morphine and medical marijuana.
BOLINAS - A Wharf Road resident told deputies that a vandal had spray painted his fence.
STINSON BEACH - Deputies attempted to detain a woman who had threatened to take her own life, but when she allegedly kicked one deputy twice, she was arrested on charges of assaulting an officer.
BOLINAS - A merchant reported that two 100-pound propane tanks had been stolen from his business. He estimated the loss at $700 to $800.
MUIR BEACH - A burglar vandalized a parked truck and stole its battery.
MUIR BEACH - A vandal broke the rear windows of two other parked vehicles but stole nothing.
DILLON BEACH - A camper reported being hit in the eye by a flying object, possibly a paint ball.
SAN GERONIMO - A deputy discovered vandalized buses at the school.
MARSHALL - A shellfish grower reported that thieves stole $1,000 oysters valued at $600.
POINT REYES STATION - A man reported losing his wallet containing his driver's license and $62.
LAGUNITAS - Child Protective Services asked a deputy to look into a report of possible child abuse. A deputy determined there was no merit to the report.
POINT REYES STATION - A restaurant employee reported that two juveniles had cut up a hose in a garden behind the business and had turned on the water. She said another worker witnessed the incident. A deputy determined the hose had not been damaged.
BOLINAS - A man told deputies that $430 had been stolen from his vehicle parked on Wharf Road.
TOMALES - A merchant on Highway 1 complained that a vandal had pulled out the merchant's ornamental plants and sprayed graffiti on his door.
TOMALES - A merchant across the highway also complained of vandalism, saying that his vegetation and a tree had been pulled up and piled in front of his door.
OLEMA - A woman reported her car had been stolen earlier that day by a man who drove her home the previous night. He also stole her purse, she said. However, she added, she had not only recovered her own car, she had taken possession of his truck.
WOODACRE - A man asked a deputy for advice after his wife did not return home the previous night because the two had quarreled. An officer gave him advice.
MARSHALL - Deputies responded to a report of electrical wires down on Highway 1.
POINT REYES STATION - A resident complained about a homeless man sleeping not far off Bear Valley Road. A deputy could not find him.
LAGUNITAS - A woman reported having problems with another woman, who is her ex-roommate. She said the other woman keeps coming back and taking things. A deputy gave her advice.
FOREST KNOLLS - A man complained about a motorcycle decorated as a sleigh going up and down Tamal Road for two hours playing loud Christmas music. A deputy reported abating the problem "for now."
POINT REYES STATION - A woman on Fourth Street found a man's wallet and turned it over to a deputy.
WOODACRE - At 9:15 p.m., a Redwood Drive man complained about a loud party with cars partially blocking the roadway.
LAGUNITAS - A woman living along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard complained that a man selling wreaths was creating a traffic hazard. A deputy determined there was no merit to the complaint since the man was "well off the roadway" and not creating a traffic hazard. He noted the woman is in a "long-standing feud with her neighbors."
BOLINAS - A woman complained that people were living in a van parked on Mesa Road. A deputy found the van had broken down and would be moved as soon as the owner got it fixed.
POINT REYES STATION - A bartender notified deputies that a disc jockey had "become abusive" and that she wanted her "out." Deputies abated the problem at 9:50 p.m. with no arrest.
STINSON BEACH - A woman near the intersection of Belvedere Avenue and Avenida Farallon at 1 a.m. complained about loud, possibly drunk, people on a deck, yelling and beating tom toms.
OLEMA - A woman at an inn complained at 2 a.m. about a couple who had been "banging and screaming for two hours." She said the guests were European and not speaking English.
FOREST KNOLLS - A woman complained that a man was tearing up her personal notes. He, in turn, denied hitting or pushing her.
STINSON BEACH - A man reported that another man, aged 40 to 50, was carrying an automatic pistol downtown.
BOLINAS - A man and a woman on Brighton Avenue separately complained to deputies at 8 p.m. about six to eight juveniles, possibly drinking or on drugs, making loud, obscene music. A deputy could not find them.
BOLINAS - A man on Wharf Road complained that an underage boy, who was drunk, kept trying unsuccessfully to get into a bar.
FOREST KNOLLS - A man complained about a "very dangerous" traffic hazard caused by construction along the roadway, which had created a six-inch dropoff to the shoulder. A deputy determined there was no hazard.
WOODACRE - A woman at 8:30 p.m. reported that a dog had attacked a small fawn and injured its hind legs. The fawn died before the Humane Society could reach the scene.
FOREST KNOLLS - Deputies received a complaint that two men were drinking in the town park at 10:30 a.m.
December 3, 1998 Sheriff's Calls
DILLON BEACH - A vandal broke the window of a man's recreational vehicle and stole property.
PT. REYES-PETALUMA ROAD - Deputies arrested a man on charges of hitting and kicking his spouse, threatening her with a knife, wrongfully imprisoning her, terrorizing her, and damaging a telephone.
BOLINAS - Deputies took a suicidal man to the 72-hour care unit at Marin General Hospital after he twice slit his wrists.
FOREST KNOLLS - Someone removed the rear window of a house, lifted out a cardboard box and flattened it but did not enter the house or take anything.
OLEMA - A deputy at 10 p.m. shot a deer that had been injured on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. He then requested that the Humane Society pick up the corpse.
FOREST KNOLLS - A burglar entered a vehicle parked on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and stole property.
BOLINAS - Deputies received a 911 call with no one on the line. When officers checked back, they could hear only static. A deputy then went to the house where the call originated and found it was abandoned.
LAGUNITAS - A Barranca Road resident notified deputies that a man, who has previously broken into his neighbor's house, is trespassing on his neighbor's property again. He then said the man was leaving in a pickup truck with a camper shell.
TOMALES - A merchant along Highway 1 told deputies that a friend of an employee took $40 from a cash register.
MUIR BEACH - A woman told deputies that last week in San Geronimo, a former employee had threatened to chop her hands off.
BOLINAS - An anonymous caller reported a truck was stuck in a ditch at 9 p.m. and that the owners had no money to get it towed out. A deputy could not find the truck.
NICASIO - Deputies received word that a car had hit a deer near the town square and that the animal was struggling in the roadway. The deer soon died, and was moved to the side of the road lest it be a traffic hazard.
DOGTOWN - A woman reported that a young calf had fallen into a pasture from a steep slope, but she did not know if the calf was injured. A deputy later reported the calf "made it home."
POINT REYES STATION - A bartender reported that two men were quarreling and asked deputies to drop by and calm things down. The problem was abated before an officer arrived.
NATIONAL SEASHORE - A man living along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard reported buying a TV from another man only to find out that the television actually belongs to the other man's mother.
POINT REYES STATION - A car hit a phone pole at Highway 1 and the Point Reyes-Petaluma Road. No one was injured, and the car drove off before a deputy arrived. The officer reported damage to the pole.
DOGTOWN - Deputies were notified of an injured deer on Highway 1, but an officer could not find it.
TOMALES - A Highway 1 resident at 8:45 p.m. complained of loud music coming from a business.
STINSON BEACH - A woman reported that the underside of her car was damaged when her daughter was driving it and hit a boat ramp.
NICASIO - A man hiking on a dirt road off Nicasio Valley Road found a freshly dug, large hole and notified deputies. Officers concluded the hole was probably dug by the golf course.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman reported that vandals broke out windows on two school buses.
BOLINAS - A merchant on Wharf Road told deputies he had suspended a 45-year-old employee and that she was now making a scene, yelling and screaming.
DILLON BEACH - A couple from Woodland, Yolo County, reported that during the night, someone had shot out a window of their vehicle, which was parked on Marine View Drive.
WOODACRE - A man complained that juveniles partying on Elm Avenue the previous night had smashed the fence to a backyard pasture for his horses and had left garbage on his property. A deputy concluded the damage was accidental and that the matter involved civil law, not criminal law. He gave the man advice.
DILLON BEACH - Firefighters asked deputies to assist at a non-injury accident, which occurred at Dillon Beach Road and Franklin School Road.
NICASIO - After an allegedly drunk driver's vehicle overturned on Nicasio Valley Road and he was detained, deputies found he had left his cellular phone behind and made arrangements to return it to him.
TOMALES - A burglar on Carrie Street broke a car's window and stole the face to the vehicle's stereo.
PT. REYES-PETALUMA ROAD - A woman reported that a man who had fled from Petaluma Police might be hiding at Union School. The suspect was gone when a deputy arrived.
TOMALES - A nighttime burglar ransacked a car parked on Dillon Beach Road and stole CDs.
DILLON BEACH - A woman on Marine View Drive told deputies another driver made her feel threatened. An officer contacted the other driver and determined the two people had merely had a verbal dispute.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman asked for extra patrols at the school mornings and afternoons. She said there are speeders who pass over the double lines in front of the school.
