August 26, 1999 Sheriff's Calls
STINSON BEACH - A woman found a wallet at Highway 1 and Calle del Mar. Inside it were a driver's license, $54 in cash, and miscellaneous papers.
INVERNESS - A restaurateur found a wallet in his parking lot and turned it over to a deputy.
POINT REYES STATION - A deputy transported a mentally disordered woman to the county crisis unit.
POINT REYES STATION - After a motorist damaged another vehicle while leaving a parking area, a deputy held him as a possible hit-and-run suspect until Highway Patrolmen arrived. Another deputy later said the damage was so minor the motorist may not have been aware he hit the other vehicle.
STINSON BEACH - A deputy on Highway 1 at 8:20 p.m. arrested a man on public drunkenness charges after he was belligerent toward patrons at two restaurants.
STINSON BEACH - A woman at 9 p.m. notified deputies that a man bleeding from his head and arm was stumbling toward Calle del Ribera from Calle del Arroyo and Highway 1. She said he was in his late 20s.
LAGUNITAS - A girl, whose parents were out for the evening, called deputies at 9 p.m. to say an intruder might be in their house. She said the television was turned off and on and that a bathroom light was turned on and off. She said she would wait for officers in the driveway.
SAN GERONIMO -A woman at 8:50 a.m. complained about her neighbors' boarding someone in a truck parked in their carport. A deputy gave her advice and said he would follow up with the neighbors.
BOLINAS - An Olema-Bolinas road resident asked for advice in dealing with his out-of-control stepson.
POINT REYES STATION - A deputy reported finding a woman's wallet in Stinson Beach the previous day.
INVERNESS - A Forres Way woman received a "strange message" on her answering machine and asked a deputy how to deal with it. The officer gave her advice.
DILLON BEACH - A resident at 7:40 p.m. reported seeing four men shooting rifles on a hillside. He said they might be poachers.
STINSON BEACH - A woman at 8 p.m. called deputies to say she needed help but then was uncooperative on the phone. Officers arrested her on charges of public drunkenness.
WOODACRE - The Improvement Club asked for extra patrols in the area because juveniles have been hanging around the swimming pool at night.
STINSON BEACH - Deputies at 8:15 a.m. received a complaint that people were sleeping in tents on the beach. An officer advised the people that camping on the beach is illegal.
DILLON BEACH - A patron refused to pay for parking at a resort until the owners could prove they have the authority to charge parking fees. A deputy said he contacted the owner and then incongruously added that a Point Reyes Station youth was scheduled to wash patrolcars.
STINSON BEACH - A Calle del Ribera resident complained that a sports utility vehicle was blocking her driveway.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman called deputies from Samuel P. Taylor Park to say she was concerned about a protest at French Ranch subdivision. She said a person there told her they knew she was a lawyer and would "get her." A deputy gave her advice. The next day, a real estate agent called deputies about the protest and asked for extra patrols; he also inquired about hiring an off-duty deputy to keep order. A day later, a sheriff's sergeant repeated the call for extra patrols around French Ranch where pickets were still protesting construction underway. At 3:20 p.m. the following day, a man complained about three to five pickets carrying signs that urged motorists to honk, but a deputy reported he was "unable to anything about the honking." At 2 p.m. a day later, a picketer told deputies that a Woodacre resident had purposely swerved his truck in an attempt to hit the pickets. However, a when deputy interviewed the Woodacre man the next day, the man pointed out he had been in Santa Cruz when the incident allegedly occurred.
POINT REYES STATION - A deputy arrested a man, 36, at Highway 1 and Third Street on a warrant for missing a court appearance in a drunk-driving case.
WOODACRE - After a hiker found large piles of dirt and plywood, he told deputies he believed fresh graves were being dug. A deputy concluded it was "most likely Marin Municipal Water District work."
STINSON BEACH - A woman at 10 p.m. reported two large bonfires on the beach. State rangers said they could not respond and that the fire was probably on the county-owned part of the beach.
OLEMA - A bartender asked for officers to stop by, saying there were "some rude customers at the bar."
BOLINAS - Deputies at 10 p.m. received a complaint about people talking and making noise on Brighton Avenue. A deputy dispersed the people.
FOREST KNOLLS - A Guadalupe Place resident at 2 a.m. told deputies he could hear fighting nearby. All was quiet when an officer arrived.
BOLINAS - A 19-year-old male at 2:20 a.m. fell off a 10-foot-high roof along Wharf Road.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman notified deputies at 3:30 a.m. that she was so upset her boyfriend was leaving that she planned to drive over a cliff.
TOMALES - An organizer of a bicycle tour at 5:40 a.m. notified deputies that 700 cyclists would take a 100-mile ride through West Marin later that day.
BOLINAS - Deputies at 6:30 p.m. received a complaint that four or five carloads of juveniles were playing loud music on Locust Road. The caller said the juveniles were smoking marijuana, drinking alcohol, "and throwing stuff at each other."
STINSON BEACH - A Bolinas man at 8:45 p.m. complained about a recreational vehicle parked for five hours along Highway 1 with people possibly sleeping inside. A deputy found the RV was unoccupied.
BOLINAS - Deputies at 9 p.m. received a complaint from a resident at Brighton and Park avenues that several people were drinking and talking loudly in the area. An officer contacted the people and advised them to quiet down.
BOLINAS - A man at 2:45 a.m. accused a bartender of striking him in the face without provocation. A deputy determined it was a case of mutual combat and that the man was drunk. A deputy turned him over to his friends for assistance.
NATIONAL SEASHORE - A man at 3 a.m. reported someone, possibly a burglar, was climbing on the roof of the Drake's Beach snack shop. A ranger could not find anyone on the roof.
STINSON BEACH - A man said that his tenants took all the appliances out of a rental house. A deputy concluded it was a civil-law dispute.
INVERNESS - A merchant found a woman's fanny pack and turned it over to deputies.
LAGUNITAS - A Chimney Lane resident complained about a neighbor repeatedly trespassing on the man's property.
LAGUNITAS - A man on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard reported $3,300 worth of property had been stolen. The loot included 12 milled feet of redwood, 18-inch by 5-foot boards, a quartz crystal, and three wooden chairs.
STINSON BEACH - A woman at 2:15 p.m. reported that a man on the beach at Calle del Embarcadero was clicking an unloaded gun. A deputy reported he would look for the man.
POINT REYES STATION - Paramedics at 7:30 p.m. responded when a patron received minor injuries from at fall in a bar.
INVERNESS - A woman reported that her 13-year-old daughter had assaulted her but that the situation had now calmed down.
POINT REYES STATION - A bartender asked for deputies to calm and remove a woman who was getting "aggressive." An officer abated the problem, and the woman left.
STINSON BEACH - Deputies at 11:30 p.m. received a complaint about people, who may have been drinking, being loud on Calle del Mar. An officer contacted the people, who were cooperative and agreed to quiet down.
WOODACRE - A woman at Railroad Avenue and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard at 1 a.m. complained about loud construction noise in the area. All was quiet when a deputy arrived.
OLEMA - An agitated person, whom deputies described as "very large for his age," got into a quarrel with a second person. Deputies separated the pair and referred the matter to paramedics.
SAN GERONIMO - An off-duty San Anselmo police officer reported he'd been having electrical work done at his house, "and things have been missing from the house when the work is done."
OLEMA - A boyfriend and girlfriend got into a quarrel at 3:20 a.m. She told deputies he was upset with her and was "tearing up the bed."
BOLINAS - A woman said that when her ex-husband picked up their son, his vehicle was not equipped with a car seat. She said the boy is four years old but under 40 pounds. A deputy gave her advice.
August 19, 1999 Sheriff's Calls
NICASIO - A 15-year-old girl ran away from home. She was located at a friend's house in Lucas Valley.
MARSHALL - Deputies at 9 p.m. received a call from a motorist at Highway 1 and the Marshall-Petaluma Road, who was stranded by car problems. The motorist, who sounded slightly disoriented, said she and a male passenger (whom she didn't know) would catch a ride to his house. He had offered to let her stay there, she said. "We advised her to wait for a tow the CHP has en route," deputies reported.
FOREST KNOLLS - A Guadalupe Place man at 9:20 p.m. notified deputies there might be a large party in the town park, and it could involve alcohol. He had, however, seen only eight people, and there was no problem with noise.
WOODACRE - A woman at Park Street and Redwood Drive heard 12 to 14 gunshots at 9:30 p.m. Deputies could not locate anyone shooting.
STINSON BEACH - A Seadrift Road man at 10 p.m. reported that the driver's license of a 29-year-old Oregon man had washed up on the beach.
BOLINAS - Deputies at 2 a.m. received a call from a resident near Maple Road and Ocean Parkway, complaining about people being very loud. "It sounds like a party," the resident said. All was quiet when a deputy arrived.
FOREST KNOLLS - A motorist at 9:30 a.m. accidentally drove off the roadway at Juarez Avenue and Montezuma Road. No one was injured.
NICASIO - A Nicasio Valley Road man complained that a former tenant had taken a $2,000 bicycle which belongs to him. He told deputies he knew her whereabouts, and an officer spoke to the woman, who said she'd return the bicycle.
INVERNESS - An Inverness Way woman complained that a former tenant had vandalized her property.
POINT REYES STATION - A deputy on the main street helped a woman get into her car after she accidentally locked herself out.
BOLINAS - A man at 7:15 p.m. notified deputies that a woman was yelling, screaming, and throwing chairs in the playground. Deputies noted the woman is taking medication and that no further action was needed.
INVERNESS PARK - A man on Drake's Summit Road at 12:20 a.m. complained about hearing loud music from "across the valley." All was quiet when a deputy arrived.
NICASIO - A man, who is the subject of a court's restraining order, asked a deputy to stand by while he picked up property from a business. A deputy stood by.
BOLINAS - A man on Wharf Road told deputies that he and his wife have joint custody of their child and that she hadn't returned the child. A deputy gave him advice.
NICASIO - A Laurel Canyon Road resident reported hearing hunters shooting on private property.
SAN GERONIMO - A developer complained of picketers blocking his driveway and asked that they be removed. A deputy found seven picketers and gave advice to both sides.
INVERNESS - A resident near Douglass Street and Forres Way complained of loud construction noise at 12:30 p.m. on a Sunday. The resident wanted the noise stopped.
BOLINAS - A man at 1:30 p.m. complained about 15 vehicles parked under no-parking signs at the end of Brighton Avenue. A deputy issued a couple of tickets for parking violations and moved the rest along.
MUIR BEACH - A woman complained that seven vehicles were illegally parked on Pacific Way at Highway 1.
TOMALES - A landlord told deputies she had given her tenants 30 days' notice of her intent to show their property that day, but the tenants were refusing to let an interested party see the property. She asked that a deputy stand by while the property was being shown, and one did.
MUIR BEACH - US Park Police asked deputies to back them up while they dealt with an "uncooperative" citizen, who had his pet off its leash and had threatened a park officer.
MUIR BEACH - After a vehicle, which had run over a cliff, was found, Hayward Police said it had been stolen in their city.
DILLON BEACH - A woman reported that her neighbor's front door had been open for two days. A deputy checked and concluded it was an apparent oversight.
BOLINAS - A man called deputies on behalf of a woman, who was a tenant on Wharf Road. While she was away, he said, her landlord moved all the items out of her home and destroyed her property. A deputy gave him advice.
POINT REYES STATION - Two vehicles collided on Highway 1. No one was injured, and the Highway Patrol handled the incident.
POINT REYES STATION - A citizen found a wallet belonging to a Texas woman, 29, and handed it in at the sheriff's substation. There was $41 in the wallet.
BOLINAS - Two vehicles at 4:45 p.m. collided at Brighton Avenue and Wharf Road. One of the motorists, a Bolinas resident, created a verbal disturbance when the other motorist refused to exchange license information. Eventually the other driver agreed to exchange information.
DILLON BEACH - A woman reported that a group of kids on the beach were throwing things at migratory birds. She said the kids are campers.
BOLINAS - A citizen found a wallet on Agate Beach and turned it in at the fire department. Deputies picked up the wallet and left a message on the owner's answering machine.
FOREST KNOLLS - A Resaca Avenue woman at 9:40 p.m. called deputies from a neighbor's house to say her husband had pushed and struck her. He was drunk, she said, and their young son was in their house. Her husband previously had "never been like this," she said; however, he was upset because they had recently broken up. At 9:30 p.m. the next day, the woman notified deputies that her husband was out of jail and at their house packing things. However, he was threatening to take their son with him, she said.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman at 10:45 p.m. complained about a car blocking her driveway and said she would sign a complaint against the motorist. Deputies noted that in the background of her phone call, they could hear her yelling at the motorist.
JEWELL - A woman told the Highway Patrol she thought she saw a body on the shoulder of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. A backpack was nearby, she said.
WOODACRE - A Railroad Avenue man at 12:15 a.m. complained about loud people on his road. All was quiet when a deputy arrived.
INVERNESS - After two senior citizens got into a dispute over their son and money, the man struck his wife but did not injure her, deputies reported.
August 12, 1999 Sheriff's Calls
POINT REYES STATION - A deputy on Highway 1 arrested a West Marin man on a Sonoma County warrant.
STINSON BEACH - A deputy at 10 p.m. shot a deer which had been injured in traffic on Highway 1 at Calle del Piños.
POINT REYES STATION - A suspect in a case of stalking and domestic battery turned himself in at the sheriff's substation. Deputies arrested him and turned him over to Petaluma police.
POINT REYES STATION - A woman slipped into the Dance Palace through a side door to avoid paying the $10 entrance fee for an event. Deputies said they would report the incident to the district attorney and recommend prosecution.
BOLINAS - An Elm Road woman at 4 p.m. notified deputies her boyfriend, who is in his 30s, was refusing to leave her home. She said no drugs or alcohol were involved, but he was being verbally abusive and "acting strangely...overly possessive." The boyfriend told deputies the two were just dealing with stress in their lives.
MARSHALL - A citizen reported someone with a tent was camping along Tomales Bay a mile south of Nick's Cove.
POINT REYES STATION - A Mesa Road woman told deputies that a girl, 12, may have run away to Novato.
INVERNESS - A man complained that two vehicles were blocking Balmoral Way. A deputy could not find the owners but agreed the vehicles were blocking access for emergency vehicles. However, the officer noted, "This is a private road."
DILLON BEACH - A woman on Marine View Drive summoned deputies when a carload of minors illegally entered a campground. However, the call was canceled when the juveniles cooperated with the woman.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman reported that her vehicle had been broken into while in a Sacramento parking lot. She said she needed to report the incident to get an airline ticket replaced. A deputy took a report for Sacramento police.
BOLINAS LAGOON - A motorist on Highway 1 at 11 p.m. saw a man pull a girl out of view of her headlights. She told deputies she wasn't sure if their vehicle had broken down and they were walking for help or trying to contact her.
STINSON BEACH - A woman on Seadrift Road at 12:45 a.m. told deputies her husband had gone swimming in the lagoon and not returned. She eventually located him.
FOREST KNOLLS - An Aztec Avenue man at 2:30 a.m. reported that a man and woman were arguing and yelling at each other. He said they were friends of a friend but that he didn't know their names. Eventually, he reported, the couple "worked things out."
STINSON BEACH - A woman on Calle del Sierra at 2:45 p.m. complained that a suburban utility vehicle was blocking her driveway. She gave the vehicle's license plate number to deputies, who determined the Ford Explorer is owned by a couple in San Rafael. When deputies looked for the vehicle, they couldn't find it.
POINT REYES STATION - A man at 3:20 p.m. complained that a motorcyclist was riding on his property along Highway 1.
SAN GERONIMO - A San Geronimo Valley Drive woman notified deputies that a man, with whom she'd had problems earlier, had returned. She said he was not drunk, but she would not give further information except to say he was not bothering her now. A deputy told her to call back if he started bothering her.
BOLINAS WYE - The Highway Patrol at 8 p.m. reported there were three brown cows and one black cow blocking Highway 1. A deputy could not reach any possible owners.
INVERNESS - A man at 9 a.m. reported that a tenant had taken property that doesn't belong to her from a house on Cameron Street. A deputy reported the matter is an ongoing civil-law dispute.
SAN GERONIMO - A social worker asked a deputy to take a report on a man who forced his way into the home of a 97-year-old woman, on whose property he lives. A deputy gave the social worker advice.
SAN GERONIMO - A man reported seeing two bicycles and two backpacks dumped in a ditch at Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Nicasio Valley Road. He said there was no one else around. A deputy could not find the bicycles nor the backpacks.
POINT REYES STATION - A store owner reported that a book and painting together worth $130 were stolen from the display in her front window.
STINSON BEACH - A woman asked a deputy for child custody advice and received it.
LAGUNITAS - A Barranca Road man at 10:15 p.m. notified deputies that his wife, 39, was two hours overdue from shopping.
SAN GERONIMO - A woman notified deputies she was trying to mediate in a verbal fight between her sister and her sister's boyfriend, both of whom are 35. She said the boyfriend was jailed six months ago.
NICASIO RESERVOIR - A deputy at Laurel Canyon and Point Reyes-Petaluma roads shot a sick possum.
TOMALES - A woman from Cotati notified deputies that she had rented a fax machine to a Tomales resident and can't get it back. A deputy gave her civil-law advice.
WOODACRE - A resident at midnight reported that a motorist had just broken down a gate along North Fire Road and had driven to a residence, which is the subject of a court's restraining order.
INVERNESS - A First Valley woman reported her 15-year-old daughter was a runaway. A deputy arrested the girl on charges of being out of parental control and of resisting arrest.
POINT REYES STATION - A social worker told deputies that a mentally disordered woman should be taken to the county crisis unit because she was not taking her medication.
LAGUNITAS - Two weeks ago, a Sir Francis Drake Boulevard woman was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon (other than a gun) during the commission of a robbery. A judge has now placed a restraining order on the woman, and this week she asked a deputy to explain it to her, which the officer did.
SAN GERONIMO - The Highway Patrol at 10 p.m. asked deputies to look for a man who reportedly was aggressively hitchhiking at Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Nicasio Valley Road. The man was waving at cars to stop, the CHP said.
INVERNESS PARK - A Laurel Street man at 1 a.m. reported his wife and child were six to seven hours overdue in returning from San Francisco. The two finally showed up at 4 a.m.
CORRECTION - The Light has heard from both parties in a Tomales dispute, which was covered in last week's column. The Light has rechecked the dispatch log and confirmed that last week's item accurately reported the message deputies received; however, that message appears to have been slightly garbled. Contrary to what was written, tenants of a Railroad Avenue landlord have accused her of illegal construction, not the other way around. (She says the charge is false and was calling a deputy for advice.) In addition, the tenants say they have not yet been served with eviction notices despite what was written. Apologies to all concerned.
August 5, 1999 Sheriff's Calls
STINSON BEACH - A burglar smashed the left rear window of a man's car parked near Steep Ravine and stole his checkbook. The burglar also "tore" the steering column and unsuccessfully tried to "hot wire" the car to start it, a deputy reported.
FALLON - A thief stole a manure spreader from a rancher's open shed, which is in a field at Alexander and Fallon-Two Rock roads.
POINT REYES STATION - A woman at 6:15 p.m. reported kids were crawling around on livestock equipment. She said she was afraid they might get hurt.
STINSON BEACH - Town firefighters notified county firefighters, who notified sheriff's deputies, that there was a bonfire on the beach at Calle del Sierra. When an officer arrived at 10 p.m., the fire was almost out.
INVERNESS - A woman at 10 p.m. notified deputies that her 15-year-old daughter had been away from home since that afternoon. She added that her daughter drives by the home and screams "every now and then. The mother said she believed her daughter was staying at a friend's house. A deputy gave her advice.
OLEMA VALLEY - A motorist at 10:40 p.m. reported there was a man in a ditch beside Highway 1 some 1.75 miles south of downtown Olema. The motorist said he was afraid to get out of his car but that he thought he had seen "a bloody male figure."
WOODACRE - A resident at 11:30 p.m. complained about a loud party in the area of Carson Road and Ivy Lane. All was quiet when a deputy arrived.
STINSON BEACH - The Highway Patrol notified deputies there was an Ohio car with a broken window just north of the firehouse along Highway 1. A deputy reported there had been a burglary accompanied by an attempted theft of the car.
LAGUNITAS - A resident complained about loud music in the area of Corona and Mountain View avenues.
FOREST KNOLLS - A man told deputies that a $150 cellular phone had been taken from his cousin's house on Vista Avenue while house guests were there.
OLEMA - A man reported that roughly four horses had kicked his son in the head. Medical treatment was provided.
STINSON BEACH - A woman at 10:30 a.m. complained there was a small bonfire on the beach at Sacramento Patio.
BOLINAS - A woman on Wharf Road reported that human feces had been spread all over a bench. A deputy found "no merit" to her report but scheduled extra patrols in the area.
MARSHALL - Deputies received word of a cow in the middle of the Marshall-Petaluma Road and contacted a rancher.
INVERNESS - As a woman checked into an inn, she asked who else was staying there, adding that officers did not want her in the area.
BOLINAS - A social worker at noon asked deputies to transport a mentally ill resident to the county crisis unit because she was not taking her medicine. However, another social worker canceled the call, saying she had arranged for the woman to take her medicine later that day.
NICASIO - A man reported that a vandal had thrown a rock through the window of property he manages.
NICASIO - A man asked for protection from someone who, he said, had assaulted him. Earlier in the day, the man reported someone had taken the lock off his door and that his guitar was missing. He said he suspects his landlord.
BOLINAS - A resident complained about a van parked overnight on Wharf Road. He said people had been sleeping in it for the past four hours. When he asked them to move, the resident said, they told him you "had better watch who you talk to because you might end up dead." A deputy noted the problem is ongoing and that the resident was "very uncooperative."
TOMALES - A Railroad Avenue homeowner told deputies she was having problems with her tenants and had been forced to call deputies about them in the past. She said she had "just noticed" the tenants "have done illegal building" on her property. They have been served with eviction notices, she added.
PT. REYES-PETALUMA ROAD - County firefighters at 9 a.m. summoned the Highway Patrol after a bicyclist fell down. Deputies noted, "There are a lot of irate bike riders out there, as a vehicle was partially involved."
MARSHALL - Deputies at 10:15 a.m. received word that a bicyclist had fallen down on the Marshall-Petaluma Road but was refusing medical treatment. However, the cyclist needed a ride, so a deputy provided transportation.
INVERNESS PARK - Deputies took a townswoman into custody and transported her to the county crisis unit after she admitted intentionally running into a restaurant's fence.
LAGUNITAS - An Arroyo Road resident accused the tenant living above her of harassing her for months. She also said he sleeps with a gun. A deputy gave her advice.
SAN GERONIMO - A motorist at 3 p.m. saw a man with a baseball bat beating on a car parked at Deer Camp and San Geronimo Valley drives. The man saw her looking at him and appeared unfazed, the motorist told deputies. The man was gone when an officer arrived.
