After a Marin deputy stopped the vehicles near the Giacomini Ranch, the helicopter landed, and the crew identified a truck as the vehicle that had been in the oncoming lane. The truck was driven by a Tomales High student, and when the deputy saw what he took to be a derringer on the seat beside the student, the officer drew a gun on the boy and shouted at him to get out of the truck. The student got out but told the officer the apparent pistol was actually a cigarette lighter, which it was. Nonetheless, the youth was handcuffed and ordered to stay at the back of the truck while other officers arrived. The student later complained to The Light he had been badly frightened because the officer was so aggressive. He said he feared he might inadvertently do something that would cause the deputy to shoot him. The boy ultimately received a ticket for driving on the wrong side of the centerline.
