April 27, 2000 Sheriff's Calls

BOLINAS - While walking on the beach, a woman lost a $200 cellular phone.

NICASIO - Deputies on Nicasio Valley Road arrested a man wanted on two warrants.

POINT REYES STATION - A woman reported the front door of her business had been kicked in during the night, but nothing seemed to be taken. In a separate incident, an employee reported an attempted break-in at the same business. The culprit did not manage to get into the business, and nothing was taken, the employee said.

FOREST KNOLLS - The Contra Costa Sheriff's Office at 9 p.m. requested that West Marin deputies ask a woman on Juarez Avenue if she knew where her car was. It appeared that her car had been stolen but recovered in Danville, deputies said.

DILLON BEACH - Deputies were summoned at 11:20 p.m. when four carloads of teenagers became belligerent when asked to pay to enter a campground. The juveniles left on Marine View Drive, campground staff reported.

POINT REYES STATION - A resident at 3 p.m. reported that a man was walking back and forth along the Point Reyes-Petaluma Road and talking to himself. A deputy reported the man has a learning disability.

TOMALES - A motorist at 9:40 p.m. asked a deputy to check on an injured deer along Highway 1 near Walker Creek.

INVERNESS - A guest staying at an inn on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard inadvertently dialed 911 when he tried to go online with his computer.

BOLINAS - A man called in a rambling report of needing medical attention although he could not say exactly what his problem was. Eventually, it was determined that he had cut his hand, and firefighters notified deputies they did not need officers to respond.

BOLINAS - A deputy at 8 p.m. responded to a report that vehicles parked in a no-parking zone were creating a traffic hazard on Terrace Avenue.

LAGUNITAS - A resident at 8 a.m. complained that a pickup truck was blocking his garage. He said his neighbor was doing construction at his residence and that he had asked his neighbor to move the pickup several times. When a deputy arrived, both parties were on the scene, and the problem was resolved.

FOREST KNOLLS - A vehicle at 10:30 a.m. ran into a tree by the postoffice, trapping a woman in the vehicle. Deputies, firefighters, and Highway Patrolmen all responded.

POINT REYES STATION - A woman complained that a stopsign on Highway 1 was hard to see and could cause traffic accidents. A deputy concluded there is no hazard.

FALLON - A woman on Whitaker Bluff Road reported her 32-year-old daughter had broken into the woman's house via a window and was now taking a shower.

FOREST KNOLLS - A Morelos Avenue resident notified deputies that at 9 p.m. the previous evening a large truck had pulled into his driveway and dumped a pile of dirt. He told officers he believes that occupants of the truck intended to break into his garage, but he scared them off.

DILLON BEACH - Deputies at 10 a.m. received a report of someone possibly carrying a firearm on Marine View Drive. An officer found juveniles with a pellet gun and admonished them.

FOREST KNOLLS - A Guadalupe Place resident told deputies that juveniles get drunk in the town park at night but hide in the bushes when they see a patrolcar coming. She asked for extra patrols.

POINT REYES STATION - A citizen reported that a very drunk man about 45 years old was driving a van south from downtown. The man had a dog in the van and was driving very badly, the citizen said.

INVERNESS - A county Health and Human Services officer asked a deputy for help in dealing with a daughter who allegedly was not letting her mother get medication.

INVERNESS - A man told deputies he had locked his bicycle to a no-parking sign on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, but the bike was gone when he returned at 3:40 p.m.

WOODACRE - A woman at 9:40 p.m. asked a deputy how to handle a female employee who calls her at different hours and may be on medication. An officer gave her advice.

BOLINAS - A woman at 11:45 p.m. complained about men, who had a large bonfire, drinking on Brighton Beach. A deputy determined the fire was not creating a hazard.

SAN GERONIMO - A woman at midnight notified deputies she had passed a vehicle stalled on San Geronimo Valley Drive.

FOREST KNOLLS - A Guadalupe Place resident at midnight complained that although deputies had been in the area, three drunk girls were still in the town park. A deputy determined the girls were making noise as they ran around trying to find their boyfriends. The woman later called deputies again to say the juveniles had now thrown dirt at her fence.

STINSON BEACH - Deputies received a report of 30 juveniles driving erratically in a beach parking lot. Officers and state park rangers responded at 11 a.m. and determined there was no disturbance underway.

STINSON BEACH - A ranger at 3 p.m. cited a 17-year-old boy on charges of possessing alcohol.

NICASIO - A Nicasio Valley Road woman at 9:40 p.m. told deputies she could hear noise from people who were either fighting or having a party. A deputy contacted one noisemaker, who said he was on parole for armed robbery.

INVERNESS - A resident at 10:25 p.m. complained about two people outside playing drums and being loud. All was quiet when a deputy arrived.

FOREST KNOLLS - A resident reported there had been a woman, 40 to 45, outside her home for the past hour acting strangely. The resident said she believed the woman was trying to hitchhike. Another resident reported seeing the woman standing on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard at 9:10 p.m. dressed all in black.

OLEMA - A car became stranded at midnight when it ran off the road.

NICASIO - A firefighter said that a person with allergies was upset about spraying planned on a ranch three miles from his home. A firefighter talked to a contractor who said herbicides would be sprayed by a helicopter later in the week.

WOODACRE - A woman reported there had been minor nighttime vandalism to the Improvement Club. Although there was no serious damage, she asked for extra patrols in the area.

NICASIO - Deputies at 2:30 p.m. received a report of a cow on Nicasio Valley Road, and contacted the rancher who owns it.

DILLON BEACH - A burglar stole cash and candy from a business after smashing a window to get inside.

 

April 20, 2000 Sheriff's Calls

INVERNESS PARK - A vandal scratched a homophobic insult on a retaining wall.

TOMALES - Lawmen were summoned from West Marin and Sonoma County when 50 people got into a physical fight at the town hall about 9:45 p.m. One man was hit on the head with two folding chairs, but the disturbance was over by the time officers arrived.

CHILENO VALLEY - A woman complained of receiving annoying phone calls from an ex-boyfriend.

INVERNESS - A neighbor at 10 p.m. saw people going through a darkened house on Elgin Way and into the home's backyard. The neighbor confronted a man in his 60s, who said they were there looking for something.

SAN GERONIMO - A female bicyclist reported a truck followed her on San Geronimo Valley Drive.

HICKS VALLEY - County firefighters reported an irate man was using a payphone and that an eight-month-old baby was in his pickup truck. The firefighters said they were concerned about the baby's well-being.

POINT REYES STATION - A juvenile, who was apparently playing with a payphone, made an obscene comment to a 911 dispatcher. The juvenile was gone when a deputy arrived.

WOODACRE - A Central Avenue resident notified deputies she has received numerous computer-generated phone calls telling her to provide her 800 number. The woman does not have an 800 number, and the computer does not leave a callback number, she noted. A deputy gave her advice.

FOREST KNOLLS - A resident reported a man was drinking near children in the town park and sometimes defecates into San Geronimo Creek. A deputy contacted three people and told them drinking in the park is prohibited by county ordinance. The officer also made sure their alcohol was discarded.

NATIONAL SEASHORE - Deputies at 2:40 p.m. received a report of cows on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Officers notified the rancher who owns them, and the road was cleared.

POINT REYES STATION - A man at 4 p.m. reported his vehicle was in the parking lot of a restaurant when it was dinged by another vehicle. The two motorists exchanged information.

FOREST KNOLLS - A merchant told deputies he had sold $500 worth of telephone gear to a man. After the man left, the merchant noticed that the five $100 bills he had received appeared to be counterfeit. He said he would go to the Hall of Justice to file a report.

WOODACRE - A woman complained that numerous illegally parked cars at Carson and Rock Ridge roads were blocking traffic. A deputy could not find any problems.

INVERNESS - A woman at 7:40 p.m. complained about loud, amplified music in the area of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Rannoch Way. A deputy, who determined a party was underway, contacted the hostess, and she said the party would be ending soon.

STINSON BEACH - A Calle del Onda homeowner at 9:15 p.m. reported that juveniles had forced open the window of her home and were holding a party inside. The woman said she had asked them to leave and requested extra sheriff's patrols in the area.

SAN GERONIMO - A Humane Society officer at midnight reported his vehicle was almost hit head-on by a red sedan full of juveniles while he was crossing White's Hill. The officer said the juveniles were speeding and driving erratically.

INVERNESS - Deputies assisted paramedics when a man had a heart attack at 3 a.m.

MARSHALL - A woman at 8:40 p.m. notified deputies that her fiancé had left San Jose to go kayaking on Tomales Bay and had not returned by 6 p.m. as scheduled.

WOODACRE - A woman complained about loud music near Rock Ridge Road at 10:20 p.m. She said her husband was ill and could not sleep because of the music. All was quiet when a deputy arrived.

POINT REYES STATION - An anonymous caller at 3 a.m. notified deputies "the guy" is talking very loudly on Commodore Webster Drive. A deputy contacted "the guy" and afterwards reported, "He's taking it inside."

FOREST KNOLLS - A resident at 10 a.m. complained about an ongoing problem concerning a man who drinks in the town park and uses a sleeping bag to spend nights there. The man was gone when a deputy arrived, but an officer said he would alert the nightshift.

NATIONAL SEASHORE - Medics responded to a resident's medical emergency.

BOLINAS - A merchant at 2 p.m. reported there was an unconscious man lying in front of a Wharf Road business. The merchant described the man as "unresponsive" and "in a flower bed."

INVERNESS PARK - A man at 8:45 p.m. reported a disturbance on Upper Roberts Drive.

NICASIO - A woman at 9:15 p.m. complained that her golden setter had been stolen within the past half hour. A deputy located the dog and concluded the woman was intoxicated.

FOREST KNOLLS - A woman at 8:30 p.m. reported a car overturned on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and that several children were crying.

FOREST KNOLLS - A woman said she wants a man, who is living with her daughter, to move. Otherwise, she said, her landlord might take away her mobilehome space.

FOREST KNOLLS - The Highway Patrol notified deputies of a hit-and-run collision on Resaca Avenue at 10 a.m. The CHP asked that a deputy contact the suspect while a Highway Patrolman remained with the victim.

BOLINAS - A man at 2:30 p.m. reported that another man, 26, is using heroin "again."

POINT REYES STATION - A juvenile called 911 from a payphone along Highway 1 and said he had been hit by a car. He then hung up but subsequently called twice again. He refused to provide any details about the supposed emergency and was gone when a deputy arrived.

FOREST KNOLLS - A woman at 2:15 p.m. complained about eight homeless people in the town park. She said they hang out there all the time and drink alcohol. However, she added, for the moment the eight were drinking sodas and were not drunk.

POINT REYES STATION - A call in last week's issue quoted the sheriff's dispatch log as saying a man had complained about seven or eight motorcyclists racing on his property. One of them, the log said, was his nephew, against whom he has secured a court's restraining order. After the nephew complained to The Light, a deputy this week confirmed that no court order had been issued. Instead, the officer explained, the property belongs to yet another relative, and her attorney had told the nephew's family that no non-family members can operate motorcycles on the property. The officer added there were actually 12 to 15 bikers on the property, not seven or eight.

 

April 13, 2000 Sheriff's Calls

INVERNESS PARK - A man told deputies he had left behind a $1,500 canoe when he moved out of a house on Buena Vista Road. When he went to get the canoe, he said, it had been stolen.

MARSHALL - A Highway 1 homeowner reported that a burglar stole a Victorian mantel and some Japanese wooden boxes from a locked shed on her property. She estimated the loss at $4,500.

OLEMA - A delicatessen found a woman's wallet and turned it over to deputies. Officers contacted the owner, who said she would pick it up at the Sheriff's main office.

BOLINAS - A minor was found drunk on Brighton Beach and transported to Marin General Hospital. He was then released to his mother.

TOMALES - Deputies on the Tomales-Petaluma Road at 5 p.m. found a drunken man who could not care for himself. He was taken to a detoxification center.

FOREST KNOLLS - A caller complained about someone living in a vehicle parked on Guadalupe Place. The caller asked for extra patrols in the area.

BOLINAS - A man complained about possibly drunk teenagers screaming at Elm and Fern roads at 10:40 p.m. A deputy found an adult birthday party underway in a backyard. The partygoers agreed to move inside and turn off their stereo.

INVERNESS PARK - A Vallejo Avenue woman reported that a man accidentally took her car key several days ago and now refuses to return it. The woman said she will have to have a new key made but added that she has received threats from the man. A deputy gave her advice. The man told deputies the woman's son owed him money and that he would return the key when he was paid, an officer reported.

FOREST KNOLLS - A man complained that a couch had been dumped on Guadalupe Place, adding that he knows who did it. The man said the county Department of Public Works won't remove the couch. A deputy gave him advice and said he would try to help him get rid of the couch.

FOREST KNOLLS - A woman complained that her neighbors have two unregistered trucks parked on the street. She told deputies she was making the complaint because the neighbors two days earlier filed a complaint about her dogs.

MARSHALL - A deputy at 1:45 p.m. reported a cow on Highway 1 just south of Marconi Cove. Deputies notified the Highway Patrol, but the CHP response was canceled when the cow was returned to its pasture.

LAGUNITAS - A townswoman showed up at the Sheriff's main office saying she wanted to report an embezzlement involving a woman who gave her "false statements."

OLEMA VALLEY - A car ran off Highway 1, but no one was injured. A deputy arranged for it to be towed.

WOODACRE - A man at 8:30 p.m. reported that he and his wife were having a verbal disturbance, and claimed she was drunk. A deputy, who spoke with the wife, said it sounded as if the husband was being "over-reactive" because he didn't like some comments his wife had made in front of their daughter.

OLEMA - A woman at 9 p.m. notified deputies of a motorist who was out of fuel. An officer determined the motorist had enough gas to reach the Sheriff's substation in Point Reyes Station and told the motorist to meet him there.

NICASIO - A Rancho Santa Margarita resident reported losing the rear license plate from his sports utility vehicle.

OLEMA - A man at 9:30 p.m. reported having seen two women on the Bear Valley Trail earlier and said he was concerned because they hadn't come out of the woods. He said they might be lost or injured.

POINT REYES STATION - A man at noon complained about seven or eight motorcyclists racing on his property. One of them, he said, was his 25-year-old nephew, against whom he has secured a court's restraining order.

WOODACRE - A motorist said that a stationwagon with an approximately 50-year-old driver had pulled up next to him and waved a gun at him.

LAGUNITAS - A man at 8:30 p.m. complained about a loud party across San Geronimo Creek from his home. A deputy contacted the host by phone, and the host promised to keep the noise down.

BOLINAS - A woman at 2:40 a.m. complained that juveniles on foot had been making noise in front of her Brighton Avenue house. However, they were gone for the night, she added.

BOLINAS - A woman at 5 a.m. reported two people in dark clothing were lying on the roadway at the Bolinas Wye. A deputy reported, "The subjects were shown the side of the road to walk on instead of the middle."

BOLINAS - Deputies at 8:25 a.m. received a report of flames coming out of three North Brighton Avenue houses. The report was without merit.

TOMALES - A man reported that about 20 tires ranging from tractor size to small had been dumped on Gericke Road during the night. He told deputies that most of the tires were now on the side of the road.

FOREST KNOLLS - A Sir Francis Drake Boulevard man reported another man had left an harassing message on the Forest Knolls man's answering machine.

WOODACRE - A man at 4:30 p.m. notified deputies that two teenagers were walking down Carson Road shooting BB guns at trees, although not at houses.

WOODACRE - A resident reported that a large white truck has been parked on Madrone Avenue for years. She said the owner had died. His house had been sold. And the truck had been abandoned. A deputy said he would have the truck tagged for towing.

LAGUNITAS - A bicyclist at 1:40 p.m. reported that some youths, who were hiding in bushes and wearing dark clothing, shot paintballs at him.

WOODACRE - A woman at 7 a.m. complained that her husband, 40, had just pushed her and thrown hot coffee on her. She said her ankle was scraped but she didn't need medical attention. The woman added that her husband was now driving off.

POINT REYES STATION - A merchant at 9:45 a.m. reported that a delivery truck had hit the bumper of a car belonging to one of the merchant's employees. There might be a transfer of blue paint onto the truck, the merchant said.

BOLINAS - A man complained about people living in two pickup trucks with camper shells parked on Brighton Avenue. He said deputies had previously told them to move along, but they just moved down the street.

INVERNESS - Deputies were notified that a car and motorcycle had collided on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. However, before they reached the scene, their call was canceled.

WOODACRE - A Redwood Drive resident at 10 p.m. reported that a man in his 30s had broken through the window (which already was partly broken) of the resident's vehicle and was rummaging through it. The resident noted a woman in a car was waiting for the man. A deputy confronted the pair, who said they were merely looking over the vehicle.

NICASIO - A Camino Margarita woman at 10:20 p.m. complained about loud, live music at a neighbor's house. All was quiet when a deputy arrived, but the woman said she would call again if the noise resumed.

STINSON BEACH - A woman at 2:35 a.m. complained about four to six boys or young adults at the end of North Calle del Sierra being loud and drinking beer. The group was gone when a deputy arrived, and all was quiet.

WOODACRE - A Maple Road woman complained that someone is fraudulently using her Social Security number.

DOGTOWN - A man at 7:40 p.m. reported a hit-and-run motorist in a pickup truck had struck his car.

OLEMA VALLEY - A car hit a cow on Highway 1 at 9 p.m. The vehicle received damage, but it was not immediately known if the cow, which had gone back to its pasture, was hurt.

MUIR BEACH - A motorist told deputies that a U-Haul truck, which he was leading, may have gotten lost or fallen over a cliff. The motorist said he had driven around looking for the truck and could not find it.

NICASIO - Deputies at 10 a.m. were told that cows grazing outside their Nicasio Valley Road pasture were a traffic hazard. Officers could not find the cows.

SAN GERONIMO - A woman reported seeing two men pushing a crying woman into a car at Roys Redwoods. A deputy who checked determined nothing amiss - just two staff members returning a patient to a facility for developmentally disturbed adults.

 

April 6, 2000 Sheriff's Calls

RED ROCK - A woman dislocated her shoulder when she fell while hiking back to Highway 1 from the nude beach. A Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter airlifted her to Highway 1. From there, friends drove her to a hospital.

POINT REYES STATION - A 69-year-old woman showed up at the sheriff's substation after she was bitten by a dog. She then drove to Marin General Hospital.

STINSON BEACH - A woman was taken to Marin General Hospital by ambulance when she developed internal bleeding 20 days after having a baby.

STINSON BEACH - A burglar stole a $3,000 computer from a metaphysical group.

FOREST KNOLLS - A father reported that his 15-year-old son had run away four days earlier. The youth was eventually found.

DILLON BEACH - Deputies received a complaint that a group of juveniles were partying on the beach with a bonfire at 2:40 a.m. The caller said the group was noisy, and the sounds of breaking glass could be heard. Officers could not find the group.

LAGUNITAS - A man at noon notified deputies that a woman was refusing to leave his home and might be on drugs. The caller, who was described as uncooperative, later said the woman had been a guest and was now gone.

FOREST KNOLLS - A man working along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard at 12:45 p.m. complained that a co-worker had urinated in his juice container. The man said he drank the juice before finding out.

WOODACRE - A woman at 3:30 p.m. reported a second woman was sitting beside Sir Francis Drake Boulevard with her stationwagon parked in the middle of the roadway. Its front end was smashed, deputies were told. However, the stationwagon and its driver were gone when officers arrived.

POINT REYES STATION - A Highway 1 woman told deputies that a group of kids were killing cats because the cats kill wild birds. The woman acknowledged feeding feral cats in the area and said she thinks they are being killed because the youths don't like her feeding them. She added that a vehicle hit one cat last year and again recently.

LAGUNITAS - A woman on Cintura Avenue told deputies her car had been struck by a pickup truck operated by a drunk driver. Deputies referred the mishap to the Highway Patrol.

LAGUNITAS - A Mountain View Avenue resident notified deputies that a burglar had stolen silverware from his home.

LAGUNITAS - A Rodeo Avenue resident complained that a vandal had scratched "49ers" on the hood of her new car.

MUIR BEACH - A woman at 12:45 p.m. complained about numerous illegally parked vehicles. A Highway Patrol officer cited many of the vehicles.

DILLON BEACH - A woman reported that her Ocean View Avenue residence had been burglarized, but she didn't yet know what was missing.

WOODACRE - A landlord reported that someone had entered a vacant house during the night and done mild vandalism. She said she suspects the child of an ex-tenant was the culprit.

BOLINAS - A motorist at 7:40 a.m. reported that a dead deer in the middle of Highway 1 was causing a traffic hazard. The Humane Society responded but couldn't find the deer.

BOLINAS - A merchant on Wharf Road at 9:30 a.m. complained about street people in front of his business harassing customers. He asked deputies to move the troublemakers along.

OLEMA - A bicyclist was knocked unconscious by a fall on the Bolinas Trail.

WOODACRE - A man complained that a thief had destroyed $300 worth of no-trespassing signs.

POINT REYES STATION - When a car got two wheels stuck in a ditch, a deputy arranged for a towing company to free it.

FOREST KNOLLS - A Resaca Avenue resident said she has been receiving harassing phone calls which, she believes, are coming from an ex-boyfriend.

MUIR BEACH - A man complained that a woman who lives on Pacific Way keeps parking in a no-parking zone that is reserved for fire engines. He said that despite his complaints, she insists on parking there, claiming it is her property.

FOREST KNOLLS - Deputies were notified that a father and son were fighting in the street. A deputy helped a Juvenile Probation officer arrest the boy.

HICKS VALLEY - A man at 9:30 a.m. reported seeing a half-ton pickup truck dump debris at a turnout on Wilson Hill Road. He said he followed the truck, which had two occupants, as far as Petaluma.

FALLON - A Whitaker Bluff Road resident reported her 31-year-old daughter had just broken a window and was now carrying two suitcases toward Highway 1.

MARSHALL - A man complained about household garbage being illegally dumped on his Marshall-Petaluma Road property. He added that hazardous material had been dumped there in the recent past.

STINSON BEACH - A woman reported that children were standing up in the bed of a pickup truck being driven by a man.

TOMALES - A woman told deputies she had been receiving threatening letters. An officer told her how to get a court's restraining order against the culprit.

TOMALES - The county Department of Public Works reported a parked car was sticking into a traffic lane of the Tomales-Petaluma Road, creating a "very hazardous" condition. The Highway Patrol couldn't find it.

INVERNESS PARK - A woman at 4:20 p.m. reported hearing another woman screaming obscenities and, "Help me, please." Park Service rangers responded and found a woman who had fallen down and couldn't get back up because of a back injury.

SAN GERONIMO - A deputy on Juniper Avenue arrested a man and woman on charges of vehicle theft.
