The St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Bolinas floats above its patch. Construction workers are digging a foundation for the church. When it was built, in 1878, the church was laid right on the ground, with no foundation. The church lies beside the San Andreas Fault and the new foundation will be reinforced with steel.
On a recent sunny day half-a-dozen men in hardhats laid pipe in a large pit. Bill Tacherra, a parish member whose family has been involved with the church for three generations, watched the work progress. Tacherra and parish member Richard Gamble are in charge of the restoration.
“My dad used to be down here and I would scratch my head and say ‘Dad, why do you spend all your time here,’” said Tacherra. “Now I’m doing the same thing.”
